Blake Edwards, writer and filmmaker who was a master of Hollywood screwball farces and comedies, as roughly “Victor / Victoria” and “Pink Panther” movies, died Wednesday night in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 88.
His publicist, Gene Schwam, said the cause was complications of pneumonia. Edwards’ wife, actress Julie Andrews, and other family members were at his side
Edwards was born in Oklahoma and his family moved to Los Angeles shortly after his birth. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II before returning to Hollywood.
He first broke into show business as a writer in 1946, the western Panhandle. He quickly moved on to direct such films as Breakfast at Tiffany’s “Pink Panther films and the Days of Wine and Roses.
